Mom Finally Updates

Hey Everyone,

This is Mama Luckett doing something new, blogging. You all should hope that I don't enjoy it so much that you get bombarded with all the thoughts that are continually in my head these days!

Hard to believe that I have been updated on passwords and you were updated on the blog by Jep since he is on the other side of the world working on his Building Science Thesis. Thank you so much, Jep for what you have done for us in updating information about Daniel.

We had encouraging news today about the infection Daniel has in that it is not as aggressive as some coming from Iraq these days. His antiobiotic regimen will probably last 6 weeks, but can be done orally. He is a bit (actually, very) tired of being a pin cushion. Due to loss of tissue in fighting the infection, his left limb was "trimmed" a centimeter during surgery yesterday to allow the best possible limb for prosthesis fitting. His fight foot which also had
infection was "washed out" during surgery. He will have another "wash out" surgery tomorrow, Friday. The goal of the surgeon is to have his wounds closed in surgery on Monday.

I thought about numbering the times Daniel has been in the Operating Room under anuthesia and don't really think I want to know the actual number!

We are learning to take one message at a time from the doctors and wait to see how things turn out. When we receive good news we are thankful, but try not to expect too much. When we receive bad news, we take the step back in stride and wait. Of course, that is the hardest part. But, remember, God is good. He is not only aware of our situation, but very involved.

Daniel has met so many people. Celebrities, Officers of highest ranking, and fellow wounded soldiers looking to encourage him in his recovery. The rehab facility has a track and hurdles if that gives you any idea of the expectations of these soldiers.

Our family is being cared for by the military with accomodations, transportation, and expenses per diem. We were invited to the Memorial Day National Concert at the Capitol that was aired on PBS on Sunday evening. We attended the concert and reception afterwards meeting more celebrities committed to these wounded warriors. It was a great night for us and encouragement to see how many Americans are touched by the sacrifices of the military.

Daniel has had cards arriving along with packages at the hospital. We are sharing with all the great staff here. Thank you so much for all your prayers, concern, and cards.

Today, General Petraeus visited and talked personally with the soldiers for several minutes. He asked Daniel about his physical training mentioning the need for core excercises. Daniel said, "The flutter kicks are only half as bad now." They say humor is the best medicine and we have laughed at some absurd situations and circumstances that aren't laughable and eased a great amount of stress. The General talked about the importance of a great attitude. You all know that Daniel has been consciously exhibiting that and doesn't understand how to approach this challenge any other way.

We have met so many families going through this hospital stay and seen all manner of injuries. The support we all try to give one another is just talking about the details we each face every day as we care for these young men. Please continue to pray for these brave men and their families at Walter Reed.
